Celebrity Spotting in Berowra Geoff Mack
So there we were, Saturday night, having a family meal at Ayothaya (excellent Thai restaurant on the Pacific Highway opposite Berowra Station) when who should arrive but Geoff Mack, Tabby Francis and their niece and her husband. Geoff and Tabby (who live locally) looked well though understandably frail (Geoff is 92). For those who don't know, Geoff, in the late 1950s, wrote the perennial hit "Ive Been Everywhere" which has been covered more than 130 times by artists including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and (after a fashion) Rhianna. I don't know Geoff personally and recognised him only because I'd once seen him in the audience a couple of years ago at a Steve Passfield gig at the Berowra Tavern (Steve said hi to Geoff from the stage, then proceeded to do his own inimitable version of the song).

Outside the restaurant, I struck up a conversation with Geoff's nephew-in-law (if that's the proper term). He mentioned that he and his wife had taken Geoff and Tabby to Tamworth in February (for non-Australians: that's the nation's biggest country music festival) and he described, touchingly, how Geoff and Tabby had "come alive" at the event, buoyed by the atmosphere, great memories and the recognition, affection and respect of everyone they met.

A wonderful story from Stephen J Fleay
Great Website and a fitting tribute to Geoff!
I was organist with the touring Carols Varieties show in 1963 1964 Under the ownership of Geoff Mack and Lucky Grills "Carols" entertained people in remote and some coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales. It was Australia's last full touring, under canvas, Vaudeville show. Geoff helped me with photography (as well as show biz in general I later became a TV presenter and international journalist).I used some of his cameras as well as developing and printing equipment and so there remains today a lasting memento of Carols in the form of hundreds of black and white and some colour photos. I also taped two of the shows, and have since restored the audio into digital format. Some of the photo and audio material of Carols and of course Geoff and Tabbi Mack has been taken in to the archives of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane.

Of the colour photos taken in 1963 one of my favourites was of Geoff and his wife Tabbi Frances sitting at the kitchen table (at left) of their caravan whilst in Gundagi... behind them a map of Australia...perhaps the very map that was the inspitation for Geoff's legend of a song "I've been everywhere".

Later circa 1979 I photographed Geoff and Tabbi at their home in mount Kuring-Gai and in the late 90's they were again pictured this time at my home in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (this one still to be restored)..

I hope you'll be able to include this short note and the two photos on your wonderful website..

It's rarely on the road of life that one can meet and make such good friends as Geoff and Tabbi Mack..

Best regards
Stephen. J Fleay.

My sincere thanks to Stephen for this lovely story I hope everyone will enjoys it as much as I do. The photos are something very special.
If anyone else has something like Stephen's story they would like to add to this tribute site I'd be most appreciative to receive it.
I am so very grateful to Stephen for his contribution to this great Legendary Australian entertainer. We cannot forget Tabbi either who has been, and still is a great Legendary entertainer in her own right.
